I'm 40 today. It's strange to be 40 and to be all the things I never thought I would be at this age... a wife, a mother, an ex-patriot, alive.
My mother was 40 when she died and for the last 23 years, more than half of my life, I have somehow thought that perhaps I would be dead at 40 too. This is the kind of magical thinking that takes over the mind of a young girl who loses her mother too soon. And I've never been able to shake it, really.
The truth is I am healthy and while not as physically fit or strong as I would like, generally in pretty good shape I guess. And when you get right down to it, I don't spend my days worrying about my early demise. But today as I go about my life - have coffee with my friends, take Myles to school and a playdate, have dinner with Jeff - it's on my mind.
It's just a feeling, familiar, almost cozy and maybe after today, it will finally be laid to rest.
I am 40 today. I am a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a friend a teacher, an ex-patriot. Alive.
